Shellye Tow
About
After serving in the U.S. Army as a medic Shellye Tow pursued her love of art. She earned an MFA in Studio Arts with an emphasis in photography and an MA in Art History from the University of North Texas. She graduated with her Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography from The Art Institute in Dallas in September 2017. The overarching theme of her work is the human experience. She explores the world from the human perspective as we move through life. She endeavors to explore these concepts that unite us as a whole. The commonalities of human life that differ but ultimately affect each of our lives regardless of gender, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexuality. She attempts to bring a sense of unity while celebrating the diversity of the human experience through unifying concepts like mortality, life, spirituality, space, time, nature, and emotion.
In addition to being an art maker she is an art historian as well. Her research dives into the history of photography and its presence in the nineteenth century. She also researches photography's historical and contemporary ethical practices.
